A section of Interstate 80 in Centre and Clinton counties reopened on Tuesday afternoon after being closed for more than 10 hours following two tractor-trailer crashes during early-morning snow squalls.
I-80 westbound between exit 178 at Lock Haven and exit 158 at Milesburg reopened to traffic by about 2 p.m., according to PennDOT and Centre County 911.
Multiple emergency response agencies were dispatched at about 3:25 a.m. to mile 158 in Boggs Township after a semi-truck went over a guard rail and remained partially in the road, according to dispatch reports.
Firefighters spent more than an hour extricating one person who was entrapped in the vehicle, according to Citizens Hook & Ladder of Milesburg. The patient was taken by EMS to the hospital, and the extent of the injuries has not been disclosed.
Shortly after responders arrived on scene, a secondary crash occurred with another tractor-trailer jackknifing and blocking both westbound lanes.
The crashes were among many that occurred overnight and into the morning hours amid slippery road conditions throughout Centre County, including accidents that led to the temporary closures of Pine Grove Mountain in Ferguson Township, Nittany Valley Drive in Walker Township and Brush Valley Drive in Gregg Township.
State College, Bald Eagle and Penns Valley school districts operated on one-hour delays, while Bellefonte had a two-hour delay and Philipsburg-Osceola was closed.
