Update 3:25 p.m. PennDot says that speed restrictions on I-80 have now been lifted. The speed limit on that highway is now the usual 65 mph.
It’s a slippery, slushy mess on area roads, thanks to a couple of inches of snow and freezing temperatures.
Major thoroughfares in the State College area are snow covered and traffic is moving at slower than normal speeds. We’ve seen some cars fishtailing as drivers navigate the slippery streets.
Speed limits on some highways in the region have been reduced because of the slick conditions.
PennDot has temporarily lowered the speed limit to 45 mph on the following highways:
• Interstate 80 in Centre County and Clinton County
• Route 22/322 from Port Royal in Juniata County to the Route 11/15 interchange in Dauphin County
Reduced speeds are also in effect on many other highways across the state.
PennDot says its crews are working around the clock to keep roads passable, but not completely free of ice and snow.
Residents are asked to avoid unnecessary travel.
If you have to go out, PennDot says you should never try to pass trucks that are plowing the roads. It’s also a good idea to carry an emergency kit that includes non-perishable food, water, blankets, small shovel and warm clothes.
