A wintry weather system is expected to bring an inch or two of snow accumulation to the State College area by Friday afternoon, according to AccuWeather.com.

Snow began falling Thursday evening in the region. By 10 p.m., many local streets had a light coating of snow, and road crews had begun to treat paved surfaces.

The temperature is expected to be about 21 degrees overnight, then climb to a high of 28 on Friday, AccuWeather.com reported. Snow showers should taper off by midday Friday, though a couple more may develop in the area on Saturday, according to the forecast.

Snow is forecast to be worse farther northeast. And in the Philadelphia area, according to a National Weather Service post on AccuWeather.com, the heaviest snow could fall at the rate of an inch an hour on Friday. A winter-weather advisory already is in effect in the Delaware Valley.

In New York City, the five boroughs are anticipating two to five inches of snow. The Big Apple also is under a winter-weather advisory.
