Here they come! Thousands of athletes, coaches and parents arrive in State College Thursday for the annual Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games. And with all that inbound traffic you may see some tie-ups around the Penn State campus.
You can expect lots of pedestrians and buses in the area around East Halls from 9 a.m. up until noon. There could be delays on Park Avenue, Curtin Road, Bigler Road, and Porter Road near the Bryce Jordan Center and Beaver Stadium.
And it doesn’t end there. A section of Curtin Road, from University Drive to Porter Road, will be closed Thursday night. The closure will last for 75 minutes, from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. That’s to accommodate the Special Olympics Parade of Athletes prior to the opening ceremonies at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Special Olympics Summer Games begin Thursday afternoon and run through Saturday. Thousands of participants will be staying in East Halls dormitories, and the event will generate higher than usual pedestrian traffic.
You should expect heavy congestion and might want to consider using alternatives routes while the athletes are in town.
