Happy Friday, Happy Valley!

It’s the first Friday of the month, and that means it’s time for First Friday in downtown State College, this time celebrating with a Winter Carnival.

Throughout the weekend, enjoy sports, outdoor activities, arts and more. We’ve compiled some of the highlights of the weekend below.

FRIDAY

First Friday
The January edition of First Friday in downtown State College is a Winter Carnival. From 5-9 p.m., Enjoy hot beverages at a number of downtown stores, make your own ice mold and learn about Light Up State College at The Make Space and warm up by the fire pits outside Schlow Library. You can check out art exhibits, enjoy music and get special discounts at businesses and restaurants. 

Women’s Hockey at Pegula
The Penn State women’s hockey team returns home to the Pegula Ice Arena to close out its non-conference slate against Ohio State. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. 

State High Girls Basketball
The Lady Little Lions girls basketball team welcomes Carlisle for a 6 p.m. tip-off in the North Building gym. After an 0-2 start, State College is on a four-game win streak.


SATURDAY

C.J.’s Resolution Challenge
A unique event to support regional autism related organizations, runners choose their race — RC Revolutions (complete as many laps as possible in three hours) or Last Man Standing (decreasing time limits on each lap). The race is 9 a.m.-noon at R.B. Winter State Park in Mifflinburg. Registration and more info.

Preschool Fair
Parents preparing to send their children to preschool will have the opportunity to explore local options at the annual Preschool Fair, hosted by State College Area School District and Mothers & More from 10 a.m. to noon at Mount Nittany Middle School, 656 Brandywine Drive.

Metropolitan Opera at The State Theatre
The State Theatre continues the Metropolitan Opera HD Series at 12:55 p.m., with a live, high-definition broadcast from the Met stage. Met Music Director James Levine conducts Verdi’s early drama of Ancient Babylon, Nabucco, with Plácido Domingo adding a new role to his repertory as the title character. 

Women’s Hockey at Pegula
Penn State women’s hockey hosts Ohio State at 2 p.m. for the second of a two-game series, with a free post-game skate and the Cubs Corner Kids Zone. A portion of ticket sales will benefit Taproot Kitchen in State College.

Women’s Gymnastics
Penn State women’s gymnastics opens the 2017 season by hosting Bowling Green, BYU and Temple at 4 p.m. in Rec Hall.


SUNDAY

First Sunday at the Bellefonte Art Museum
The Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County’s First Sunday marks the opening of a new exhibit, ‘Artworks by William (Billy) Mills, Special Talents & Special Needs.’ Opening is at noon, with reception and free art activity for children from 1-4 p.m. 

Trinity Bellefonte 200th Year Kickoff
Trinity Bellefonte United Methodist Church, 128 W. Howard St., kicks off its 200th Year Celebration at 9:30 a.m., joined by the Penn State Senior Brass Quintet during the service, which also will feature Susquehanna Conference District Superintendent The Rev. Lori Steffensen for a special message. A reception in which the year’s celebration events will be discussed over food & refreshments will follow.
