Exhibit Reception - Up, Up and Away: Sherm Lutz and the State College Air Depot

Join us for a short program and exhibit reception for Up, Up and Away: Sherm Lutz and the State College Air Depot.

Sherman “Sherm” Lutz was a pioneer aviator, instructor, and airport owner in Centre County, Pennsylvania during the mid to late 20th century. He played a pivotal role in bringing commercial airline flights to the region. Although he wasn’t an official member of the faculty, he was able to successfully advocate for the creation of an aeronautical engineering curriculum at the Pennsylvania State University, which as of 2018 is still the only program of its kind in the state and is consistently ranked as one of the top 15 in the country. He also served as the local official pilot instructor for the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Authority’s Civilian Pilot Training Program; many of his students went on to become military and commercial airline pilots.
