Centre County Adds 1 COVID-19 Death, 141 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 10,127 New Positives

Centre County registered one new COVID-19 death and 141 more cases of the virus on Friday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The death is the county’s 261st attributed to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

With 97 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 33,746.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 23,138 (20,805 confirmed and 2,333 probable). Centre County also had 24 new negative test results to bring the total to 84,790.

Pennsylvania added 10,127 positives — the largest single-day increase since early January — bringing the statewide total to 1,763,796. There were 4,636 new negatives for a total of 5,922,537.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 59 COVID-19 inpatients, six more than on Thursday, with 10 in intensive care [+3] and eight on ventilators [+1]

The patients range in age from 27 to 95, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Eighteen are fully vaccinated and 41 are not vaccinated.

On Thursday night, Mount Nittany temporarily diverted ambulances from the emergency department due to high patient volumes. The diversion was a consequence of sustained high community transmission of COVID-19 and hospitalizations for the virus, hospital officials said. Though the diversion was lifted on Friday morning, they warned that “extraordinary measures” are expected to continue.

For now, that means all elective surgeries requiring an overnight inpatient stay at Mount Nittany Medical Center may be postponed through next week; community members seeking emergency care can expect significantly longer wait times and visitations remain restricted.

Pennsylvania has 3,985 COVID-19 inpatients, 57 more than on Thursday, with 879 in intensive care [+42] and 475 on ventilators [+4]. Statewide hospitalizations are at their highest level since Jan. 23.

An estimated 91% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation that considers a case as recovered if it has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of the first positive test or onset of symptoms.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 40 active COVID-19 cases among inmates — one more than on Thursday and the second most among state correctional institutions — and 26 among staff [-3], the second highest among SCIs.

Rockview state prison has two active inmate cases [+2] and 19 among staff [+6], the third most among SCIs.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,563 inmates are fully vaccinated, 10 are partially vaccinated and 198 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 284 are fully vaccinated and 344 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,673 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 61 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 325 are fully vaccinated and 392 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Friday morning, 88,690 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated [+475 since Thursday] and 10,269 are partially covered [-188]. Third doses have been administered to 24,243 county residents [+351].

Among the county’s entire population, 69.3% have received at least one dose and 53.7% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.5% have received at least one dose and 58.7% are fully vaccinated.

Statewide, 69.5% of adults and 58.8% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
