Centre County Adds 1 COVID-19 Death, 219 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 16,695 New Positives

Centre County registered one new COVID-19 death and 219 more cases of the virus on Thursday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The death is the county’s 319th since the start of the pandemic and 30th reported this month. The new cases bring the county’s total to 32,760 (29,237 confirmed and 3,523 probable).

Centre County’s moving seven-day average for new cases is 211, down from 244 a week ago.

Pennsylvania reported 16,695 new positives — the largest increase in a week — to increase the statewide total to 2,622,134. The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 14,078, down from 21,217 a week ago.

With 325 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 40,257.

Hospitalizations

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 53 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, two fewer than on Wednesday, with four in intensive care and three on ventilators.

Mount Nittany Medical Center did not update its COVID-19 inpatient dashboard with patient ages and vaccination status as of 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 hospitalizations declined for the 11th consecutive day. According to the hospital preparedness dashboard, 5,554 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized statewide, 235 fewer than on Wednesday, with 915 patients in intensive care [+6] and 566 on ventilators [-24].

Nursing and Personal Care Home Cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported three new COVID-19 cases among residents and four among among employees. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 743 resident cases, 714 employee cases and 180 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has six active COVID-19 cases among inmates, two more than on Wednesday, and 18 among staff [-5].

Rockview state prison has 56 active inmate cases [+1] and 50 among staff [+3].

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,472 inmates are fully vaccinated, 13 are partially vaccinated and 194 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 308 are fully vaccinated [+1] and 320 are not vaccinated [-1].

Rockview has 1,696 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 59 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 343 are fully vaccinated [-1] and 374 are not vaccinated [+1].

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

DOH did not update vaccination numbers as of 1 p.m. on Thursday. As of Wednesday morning, 92,707 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 13,979 are partially covered. Booster doses have been administered to 46,432 county residents.

Among the county’s entire population, 68.2% have received at least one dose, 58.1% are fully vaccinated and 49% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 73.6% have received at least one dose, 62.4% are fully vaccinated and 51.4% have received a booster.

Statewide, 75.4% of adults and 65.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
