Centre County Adds 4 COVID-19 Deaths, 391 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 18,955 New Positives

Centre County registered four new COVID-19 deaths and 391 more cases of the virus on Friday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county now has had 313 deaths attributed to COVID-19, including 24 reported this month.

The new cases mark the county’s second largest single-day increase of the pandemic and bring the total to 31,674 (28,344 confirmed and 3,330 probable).

Pennsylvania recorded its fifth consecutive day with fewer 20,000 new cases. The 18,955 new positives bring the the commonwealth’s total to 2,542,544.

With 269 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 39,362.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has 52 COVID-19 inpatients, four more than on Thursday, with eight in intensive care [+2] and five on ventilators [+1].

The patients range in age from 28 to 92, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Fifteen are fully vaccinated and 37 are not vaccinated.

Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 hospitalizations fell for the fifth consecutive. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard 6,794 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized statewide, 168 fewer than on Thursday, with 1,106 patients in intensive care [-14] and 647 on ventilators [-47].

Nursing and Personal Care Home Cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported 12 new cases among employees. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 732 resident cases, 689 employee cases and 180 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison four active COVID-19 cases among inmates, up from zero on Thursday, and 26 among staff [-2].

Rockview state prison has 54 active inmate cases [+2] and 61 among staff.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,486 inmates are fully vaccinated, 12 are partially vaccinated and 194 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 306 are fully vaccinated and 322 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,691 inmates who are fully vaccinated, one who is partially vaccinated and 58 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 343 are fully vaccinated [+1] and 374 are not vaccinated [-1].

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Friday morning, 92,478 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 61 since Thursday, and 13,850 are partially covered [+59]. Booster doses have been administered to 45,728 county residents [+162].

Among the county’s entire population, 68% have received at least one dose, 58% are fully vaccinated and 48.3% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 73.3% have received at least one dose, 62.3% are fully vaccinated and 50.9% have received a booster.

Statewide, 75.2% of adults and 65.2% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
