Centre County Adds 43 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 5,338

Centre County reported 43 new COVID-19 cases on Friday to bring its total to 10,451, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Pennsylvania added 5,338 new positives, bringing the statewide total to 794,172.

The county also had 132 additional negative test results, increasing its total to 55,316. Across Pennsylvania there were 12,925 new negatives for a total of 3,533,761.

The health department reported two new COVID-19 deaths among Centre County residents to bring the total to 181. Coroner Scott Sayers has confirmed 130 deaths in Centre County, ranging in age from 55 to 104.

With 193 new COVID-19 deaths reported on Friday, Pennsylvania’s total is now 20,321.

Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 32 COVID-19 inpatients as of Friday morning, a decrease of five since Thursday. The patients range in age from 49 to 96, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Since Jan. 1, Mount Nittany has admitted 157 COVID positive patients, with an average census of 46 COVID inpatients per day. In December, the hospital admitted 246 COVID positive patients with an average of 49 COVID inpatients per day.

“While hospitalizations remain high, the past several weeks have seen COVID inpatient numbers trending slightly lower,” Dr. Nirmal Joshi, Mount Nittany Health chief medical officer, said in a statement.

Statewide, 4,169 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, including 822 in intensive care and 507 on ventilators.

Nursing and personal care homes in Centre County reported one new case among residents. A total of 16 long-term care facilities in the county have had a combined 646 resident cases, 138 employee cases and 134 resident deaths.

Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate for the week of Jan. 15-21 was 6.6%, down from 9.1% the prior seven days, according to the state’s early warning monitoring dashboard. Pennsylvania’s statewide rate was 10.5%, down from 12.8% the previous week

An estimated 78% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.

Among Pennsylvania’s total cases, 699,171 are confirmed and 95,001 are probable. In Centre County, 9,747 are confirmed and 704 are probable.
