Centre County Adds 51 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Surpasses 20,000 Deaths
Centre County reported 51 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday to bring its total to 10,408, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Pennsylvania added 5,664 new positives, bringing the statewide total to 788,834.
The county also had 110 additional negative test results, increasing its total to 55,184. Across Pennsylvania there were 13,744 new negatives for a total of 3,520,836.
The commonwealth has now recorded more than 20,000 deaths attributed to the virus. With 260 new COVID-19 deaths reported on Thursday, Pennsylvania’s total is now 20,128.
Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 death toll has more than doubled in the past two months. On Nov. 21, it stood at 9,801.
Coroner Scott Sayers confirmed on Wednesday evening eight more COVID-19 deaths in Centre County that occurred between Dec. 31 and Jan. 14. The five men and three women ranged in age from 69 to 95. Five were reported at Mount Nittany Medical Center, two at a long-term care facility in the 16803 zip code and one at a residence in the 16823 zip code.
Sayers has confirmed a total of 130 COVID-19 deaths in Centre County, ranging in age from 55 to 104. The health department now lists 179 deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, an increase of four since Wednesday.
Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 37 COVID-19 inpatients as of Thursday morning, one more than on Wednesday. The patients are between the ages of 30 and 99, a hospital spokesperson said.
According the DOH’s hospital preparedness dashboard, which includes the medical center and rehabilitation hospitals, 39 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, including two in intensive care and two on ventilators.
Statewide, 4,758 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, including 851 in intensive care and 530 on ventilators.
Nursing and personal care homes in Centre County reported one new case among residents and one among staff. A total of 16 long-term care facilities in the county have had a combined 645 resident cases, 138 employee cases and 134 resident deaths.
An estimated 78% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.
Among Pennsylvania’s total cases, 694,492 are confirmed and 94,342 are probable. In Centre County, 9,705 are confirmed and 703 are probable.
