Centre County Adds 89 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 4,927

Centre County reported 89 new COVID-19 cases on Friday to bring its total to 14,225, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Pennsylvania added 4,927 positives — the highest single-day increase since Feb. 1 — for a statewide total of 1,005,167.

The county also had 133 additional negative test results, increasing its total to 64,444. Across Pennsylvania, there were 10,758 new negatives for a total of 4,095,101.

Centre County’s total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 remained at 213 for the 20th consecutive day.

With 36 new COVID-19 deaths reported statewide, Pennsylvania’s total is 24,953.

Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 22 COVID-19 inpatients as of Friday morning, one less than on Thursday. The patients range in age from 18 to 88, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The hospital has had an average daily census of 17 COVID-19 inpatients in March.

“Over the last several weeks, we’ve seen an uptick of COVID-19 cases in our community, and with it, a steady increase in numbers of patients hospitalized due to COVID,” Tiffany Cabibbo, executive vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer, said in a statement. “We are seeing our highest number of COVID-19 patients in six weeks, and is a trend that has us highly concerned.”

Cabibbo added that while Mount Nittany has administered more than 27,000 doses of vaccines, it will take many months to vaccinate everyone and COVID-19 is a serious virus with an unpredictable course.

“Now is not the time to become complacent,” she said. “While we understand frustrations surrounding the virus, it is crucial that we continue to consistently practice safety measures including masking, frequent hand washing and social distancing.”

Statewide, 1,717 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, including 358 in intensive care and 194 on ventilators.

An estimated 91% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, per a health department calculation.

A total of 40,720 people in Centre County are at least partially covered by the COVID-19 vaccine. The total includes 25,353 who are fully covered, either through the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine or both required doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, according to health department data.

Among Pennsylvania’s cases, 856,685 are confirmed and 148,482 are probable. In Centre County, 12,989 are confirmed and 1,236 are probable.
