Centre County Adds Record 415 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 33,266 New Positives

Centre County recorded its largest single-day COVID-19 case increase of the pandemic with 415 new positives reported on Sunday, according to Pennsylvania Department of Health data.

The new cases, which eclipse the previous record of 358 set on Jan. 8, bring the county’s total to 30,520 (27,465 confirmed and 3,055 probable).

Pennsylvania reported 33,266 new cases to bring the statewide total to 2,458,722. The new cases mark the commonwealth’s second largest increase, behind only the 33,650 also reported on Jan. 8.

Hospitalizations

After 18 consecutive days of increases, Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 hospitalizations decreased for second straight day. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard 7,275 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized statewide, 103 fewer than on Saturday, with 1,119 patients in intensive care [-25] and 707 on ventilators [-17].

In Centre County, 45 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized with six in intensive care and six on ventilators, all unchanged from Saturday.

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 305.

With eight new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the commonwealth’s total is now 38,619.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has two active COVID-19 case among inmates and 22 among staff.

Rockview state prison has 24 active inmate cases and 53 among staff.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,489 inmates are fully vaccinated, 13 are partially vaccinated and 193 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 306 are fully vaccinated and 322 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,696 inmates who are fully vaccinated, one who is partially vaccinated and 58 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 342 are fully vaccinated and 375 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Sunday morning, 92,211 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 40 since Saturday, and 13,714 are partially covered [+93]. Booster doses have been administered to 40,634 county residents [+133].

Among the county’s entire population, 67.4% have received at least one dose, 57.6% are fully vaccinated and 43.5% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 72.7% have received at least one dose, 62% are fully vaccinated and 45.8% have received a booster.

Statewide, 74.9% of adults and 64.9% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
