STATE COLLEGE — Mount Nittany Health recently announced that Kennita Burns-Johnson, D.O., has joined the general surgery staff at the Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Burns-Johnson has extensive breast surgery experience and is board certified. Her breast surgery experience adds to Mount Nittany Health’s comprehensive breast care services, from diagnosis to treatment, including OB/GYN, breast imaging, medical and radiation oncology, plastic surgery and navigation.
“I live in town but was practicing in Tyrone. I decided to come back to work in my own community,” said Burns-Johnson. “Mount Nittany Health offers an excellent quality of care with a small community feel where you can really get to know your patients.”
Burns-Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Temple University and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her surgical residency at East End Health Alliance (now Stony Brook), a program that served Southampton Hospital and Peconic Bay Medical Center, and did several rotations at Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, New York.
Today, Burns-Johnson specializes in procedures related to breast health.
“From start to finish, I focus on engaging with my patients early and often,” said Burns-Johnson. “I make sure they understand their diagnosis, the options they have for treatment, my role in the process and that the decision on treatment is their decision.”
When she’s not treating patients, Burns-Johnson enjoys spending time with her family, bike riding and focusing on her own health.
Though Burns-Johnson has a special interest in breast surgery, she also has extensive experience in general surgery practice. She has been performing laparoscopic and open surgical procedures including gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, abdominal procedures, subcutaneous and soft tissue mass excision, lymph node surgery and placement of intravenous access ports.
