Jan. 8

Homeschool Gym and Swim Free Trial Class

State College YMCA is launching a new Gym & Swim Program for homeschool children ages 3-14, held Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A free trial day will be held on Jan. 8 – open to the community! Kids will enjoy structured time in the pool from 11 a.m. to noon, quick changing period from 12 to 12:15 p.m., and fun activities in the gym from 12:15 to 1 p.m. Participants should bring a water bottle, gym clothes, gym shoes, a towel, a bathing suit, and a snack. Registration is required.

Mount Nittany Hiring Event

Mount Nittany Medical Center is hosting a hiring event at Mount Nittany Medical Center — Conference Rooms 1, 2 and 3. Park by the auditorium entrance for easiest access. Eligible new hires can receive a $7,500 sign-on bonus. Positions available include plant operations worker, maintenance worker and electrician. LEGO Hour

Children and their families are invited to drop in at the Centre County Library in Bellefonte between 3 and 4 p.m. to play with LEGOs, Duplos, and other building supplies. Creations will be displayed in the LEGO display case afterwards! No need to register, just drop in.

Watercolor Artist at Foxdale Village

From Jan. 9 to March 11, Watercolor artist Lena Thynell will be presenting her art in the 2nd Floor Gallery at Foxdale Village, 500 E. Marylyn Ave., with an opening reception on Sunday, Jan. 11 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the meeting room.  

Light of the World Clothing Bank

St. John’s United Church of Christ Light of the World Free Clothing Bank, 145 W. Linn Street, Bellefonte, will be open from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Free clothing available from babies to adults. 

Jan. 10

Chess Club

Walk in chess club from 10 to 11 a.m. at Centre County Library, 200 N. Allegheny St., Bellefonte. Open to children, teens, and adults. All skill levels are welcome. A chess instructor is available to either teach guests how to play or to help improve their play.

Discovery Space Deep Dig

Children ages 7 to 10 can dig down into the depths of the Earth from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Holt Memorial Library, 17 N. Front St., Philipsburg. to explore the wonderful world of geology! Learn the diving forces that shape the features of the Earth. Learn how rocks form and the distinction between rocks and minerals Explore the unique physical properties used by geologists to classify specimens. Registration required.

Ice Candles

Create your very own ice candle at Black Moshannon State Park in Philipsburg and then take it home!  Ice from the lake will be used, contingent on availability. LEGO Day

Families and children are invited to stop in at the Centre Hall Area Branch Library anytime between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to play with the library’s LEGO collection.

Jan. 11

Centre Ballroom Dance

Centre Ballroom will have a dance from 2 to 5 p.m. at Lambert Hall, Bellefonte. Cost is $10/person. Please bring a snack to share.

Jan. 12

Cash BINGO

Cash Bingo from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic School, 116 East Bishop St., Bellefonte. Paying out $850 each evening. Doors will open to the public for food and games of chance at 6 p.m. and the first BINGO will begin at 7 p.m. $20 for 20 games. Walk-ins welcome! Smoke free facility. Homemade baked goods and items for dinner. Benefits the Bellefonte Knights of Columbus.

Chess Club

Chess Club for beginners or experienced players at Holt Memorial Library, 17 N. Front St., Philipsburg from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There will be an instructor available to teach and assist anyone that would like to learn how to play. There is no need to register, just drop in.

Jan. 13

Winter Biking Class

Join Sustainable State College for a presentation on winter biking. Gain essential knowledge on adapting riding style for winter weather and learn about what equipment and clothing you can use to ride safely and comfortably throughout the winter season. Examples of proper bike gear and clothing will be available at the event. The class will be held at the Municipal Building, Room 241, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Registration preferred, but walk-ins are welcome.

Jan. 14

Piano recital

“In the Moon of Wintertime” piano recital of holiday music will be held from 6:15 to 7 p.m. to benefit the food distribution ministry at Grace Lutheran Church, 205 S. Garner St., College.

Ekphrastic Poetry Workshop

An inspiring, interactive session designed to help explore language, find your own voice and deepen your craft. Bring a notebook and ideas to this mini-lesson and workshop for poetry to Bellefonte Art Museum, 133 N. Allegheny St., Bellefonte from 6 to 7 p.m. All ages and experience welcome.

Jan. 15

Homeschool Art Studio

Homeschoolers ages 5-12 are invited to participate in Homeschool Art Studio at Schlow Centre Region Library, 211 S. Allen St., State College. The event will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. with a limit of 16 students. Registration required.
