HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Bald Eagle Area girls team erupted for 24 goals in three wins and a tie, including two shutouts, in six days.
The Lady Eagles rolled to shutouts on Thursday, Sept. 5, at home against Richland, 5-0, and on a cold and windy Saturday, Sept. 7, at Moshannon Valley, 9-0. They also won big on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Bishop Carroll, 9-2. Then Bald Eagle Area and host Hollidaysburg battled to a 1-1 tie in two overtimes on Monday, Sept. 9.
Bald Eagle Area’s Sybil Thompson continued her torrid offensive attack in those four games, scoring nine goals. Thompson broke a scoreless tie against Hollidaysburg when she scored at the 57:38 mark off an assist from Sydney Thompson.
Hollidaysburg’s Bella Vent tied the score at 78:49. Neither team scored from there as Bald Eagle Area goalkeeper Makayla Spicer and Hollidaysburg’s Natalie Foster made eight saves apiece.
“What an outstanding game,” Bald Eagle Area coach Jared Moore said. “We played tough defense all game long and absorbed a lot of pressure. We earned a free kick and Sydney Thompson put it right over the line for Sybil Thompson to run into and she hit a beautiful volley into the side net.
“We held off a strong Hollidaysburg attack but they capitalized late and tied it up. The two overtime periods were just as intense, and we finished in a draw.”
Thompson scored four goals against Moshannon Valley, with assists from Addisyn Burns, Savanna Albright, Abby Hacker and Makenzie Bickle.
Adrienne Hacker, Albright, Bekah Barndt, Abby Hacker and Heidi Eveleth also scored two goals each.
Bald Eagle Area outshot Mo Valley, 25-3. Bald Eagle Area goalkeepers Emily Steffan and Makayla Spicer combined for three saves.
Savanna Albright recorded the hat trick with three goals against Bishop Carroll. Adrienne Hacker was involved with the scoring a lot, scoring one goal and assisting on five other goals.
Thompson scored on goal and assisted on goals by Hacker and Lydia Walk. Bickle, Sydney Thompson and Addie Tice also scored. Spicer made six saves.
Thompson scored three goals against Richland to get the hat trick. Bickle and Abby Hacker scored the other goals, while Adrienne Hacker had two assists. Bald Eagle Area had another big edge on shots with an 18-3 advantage. Spicer had three saves.
“Richland came out strong and matched us really well,” Moore said. “It was back and forth for about the first 20 minutes, but the defense was fantastic tonight led by Sydney Thompson, Alexa Thomas, Maddie Donley, Lily Spicer and Maddy Lykens. Makayla made the saves when we needed her to in the first half.
“Sybil was everywhere again. It’s hard to match her work rate. She is really seeing the ball well and making the runs that give her opportunities to hit shots.”
Bald Eagle Area was scheduled to put its 5-0-1 record on the line in another Blair County game on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Bishop Guilfoyle, after The Centre County Gazette’s publishing deadline.
BELLEFONTE’S DEWEESE NETS HAT TRICK
The Bellefonte girls team rolled to a 7-0 win on Thursday, Sept. 5, at Somerset, getting three goals from freshman Addalyn DeWeese, before beating Clearfield, 5-0, on Monday, Sept. 9, at home.
Madelyn Fallon booted in two goals and assisted on another against Somerset. Madyson Miller scored a goal and had an assist. Emily Price also had a goal. Annie Cernuska and Brooke Whitman recorded assists.
Bellefonte goalkeeper Rory Pelipesky made eight saves to preserve the shutout.
Against Clearfield, Fallon and Sydney Miller scored two goals apiece and Laila Packer scored a goal. Pelipesky made two saves in the second shutout.
The 3-1 Lady Red Raiders, who also lost at Forest Hills, 3-1, were set to play at Philipsburg-Osceola on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Results were not available prior to The Centre County Gazette’s publishing deadline.
LADY MOUNTIES FALLS TO BISHOP CARROLL
The Philipsburg-Osceola girls team suffered a 5-3 loss to Bishop Carroll on Thursday, Sept. 5, at Mountaineer Stadium.
Lily Warlow scored a goal and assisted on another. Maddyx Hampton and Kaydence Clemmer also scored goals. Natalie Kyler assisted on Clemmer’s goal late in the game.
The 0-3 Lady Mounties were to play on Monday, Sept. 9, at Bishop Guilfoyle and Wednesday, Sept. 11, at home against Bellefonte. Results were not available prior to The Centre County Gazette’s publishing deadline.
P-O’S LONG SCORES 6 GOALS IN WIN
After setting the school record for goals, Philipsburg-Osceola’s Carson Long tied the program record for most goals in a game with six in an 8-2 rout on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Johnstown.
Long, who matched Alex Godin’s 2021 record against Tyrone in 2021, scored the first three goals, with Sawyer Sites dishing out two assists and Nate Riggleman getting the other assist.
Sites scored one goal and assisted on four others. Siler Dixon scored a goal and assisted on another. Philipsburg-Osceola outshot Johnstown, 24-9.
The Mounties followed that with a dramatic 2-1 win over Bishop Carroll on Thursday, Sept. 5, at home, getting an unassisted goal from freshman Cale McDowell with 1:11 left in the game. Long scored the first goal in the first half off an assist from Sites. Goalkeeper Matt Thompson made 10 saves.
Philipsburg-Osceola (4-0) was scheduled to host Bishop Guilfoyle on Tuesday, Sept. 10, play Thursday, Sept. 12, at Bellefonte and host Central at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
RAMS BOUNCE BACK FROM LOSS
The Penns Valley boys team bounced back from a 1-0 overtime loss on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Somerset by winning, 2-0, on Thursday, Sept. 5 over Westmont Hilltop at home.
Penns Valley’s Luke Ruoff scored on a penalty kick early in the second half to break a scoreless tie against Westmont Hilltop. Josh Conklin scored with 10:06 left to play for the final goal.
The 2-2 Rams were to host Tyrone on Tuesday, Sept. 10, before playing on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Clearfield and Saturday, Sept. 14 at Mifflinburg.
EAGLES IN A COUPLE CLOSE GAMES
The Bald Eagle Area boys team found itself in two close games, losing at Bishop Carroll, 2-1, on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and tying Richland, 1-1, on Thursday, Sept. 5.
Aiden Bougher scored a goal against Bishop Carroll thanks to an assist from Connor Maney. Bald Eagle Area was up 1-0 at halftime, but Bishop Carroll scored two goals to start the second half.
“We had some other chances,” Bald Eagle Area coach Jason Bair said, “but we could not score.”
LITTLE LIONS FALL TO CENTRAL DAUPHIN
The State College boys team lost, 3-2, at Central Dauphin. The Little Lions were scheduled to host Lewisburg at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
