STATE COLLEGE — The PA Council of Trout Unlimited named Robert Vierck as the recipient of the 2024 Ken Sink Award for Outstanding Contribution, an award that highlights a person who has “demonstrated steadfast dedication to coldwater conservation, protection, restoration, as well as volunteerism and leadership,” a release from PA Council of Trout Unlimited shared.

Vierck first became involved with PA Council of Trout Unlimited’s Spring Creek Chapter in 2004, servicing as chapter president from 2014 to 2018.

“Beyond his exemplary leadership, Bob’s major contributions to the watershed include his work on stream restoration projects. He has taken responsibility for assessing stream health, designing restoration solutions, estimating pollution reductions, securing funding and managing project implementation and finances,” the release shared, noting that Vierck oversaw $1.5 million in stream improvements for both the Spring Creek and Bald Eagle Creek watersheds.

“His effective funding efforts and leadership to form partnerships with government and nonprofit organizations have significantly reduced pollution and improved habitat quality for wild trout and other aquatic life in these watersheds.”

In addition to Vierck’s recognition, the PA Council of Trout Unlimited presented the Spring Creek Chapter with the Diversity Award, an award which “recognizes a chapter that promotes participation from individuals of various ages, genders and ethnic backgrounds, both among their memberships and leadership,” the release shared. “In addition, it recognizes efforts to reach out to all segments of society, fostering inclusivity and representation.”

Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited was given the Diversity Award for its commitment to diversity in its educational, social and conservation initiatives, which PA Council of Trout Unlimited noted included the chapter’s involvement with diverse groups including, children, veterans, women and scouts in fishing.

“SCCTU’s governance mirrors community diversity with women and members of various ages on the board,” the release shared. “The chapter fosters participation through an active social media presence, welcomes diverse participants and volunteers, values all contributions and embraces the diverse experiences of its members.”
