Rams finish second in District 6 Class 2A Duals

SPRING MILLS — Top-seeded Penns Valley finished second to state and national powerhouse Bishop McCort in the District 6 Class 2A Duals on Saturday, Feb. 1, at home. 

The Rams reached the championship match with a 45-23 win over fourth-seeded Huntingdon in the semifinals. Bishop McCort reached the championship with a 65-10 victory over Bald Eagle Area. 

The Crimson Crushers, ranked No. 1 in the nation, then beat the Rams, 59-6, in the championship. Huntingdon defeated BEA, 36-34, in the third-place match. 

Despite the loss, the 13-3 Rams advanced to the PIAA Duals. They were to wrestle District 7 fourth-placer Quaker Valley in a preliminary round match on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Burrell High School. The winner of that match was scheduled to wrestle District 7 champion Burrell in the first round immediately afterward. Results from the matches were not available at the time of The Gazette’s publishing deadline.

The winner of first-round matches advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Altoona Fieldhouse. The Fieldhouse is hosting the final eight teams in Class 2A and 3A.

In the win over Huntingdon, Penns Valley’s Max Dinges (114), Conner Myers (121), Erik Carlile (127), Tripp Watson (133), Seth Fetterolf (152) and Brayden Lisowski (160) won by fall. Zachary Rummel (139) racked up a technical fall, while Landon Hess (285) earned a major decision.

The Rams had only two bout wins against McCort — decisions by Myers and Carlile. 

The Eagles and Bearcats went back and forth, leaving the Eagles with a 34-33 lead going into the last bout. Huntingdon’s Landon Erdman gave his team the win with a 4-1 victory over Brody Gardner at 285.

BEA’s Liam Purcell (121), Caden Judice (133), Alex Surovec (152) and Caleb Close (215) had falls against Huntingdon. Tanner Guenot (127) and Dawson Lomison (139) racked up technical falls. 

The Rams reached the semifinals with a 57-15 quarterfinal win over Philipsburg-Osceola on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at home. 

Penns Valley got pins from Hess (215), Carlile (127), Sawyer Fetterolf (145), Seth Fetterolf (152), Lisowski (160) and Robert Martin (172). Evan Eichenlaub (285) and Connor Guenot (139) recorded falls for the Mounties. 

The featured bout of the night was at 121, where Myers earned a 4-3 win over two-time state qualifier Caleb Hummel. Hummel, a junior, earned his 100th career win by finishing second in the Ultimate Warrior at West Branch the weekend of Feb. 24 and Feb. 25.

P-O reached the quarterfinals with a 39-34 win over Moshannon Valley before the loss to PV. The Mounties, who trailed 28-3 after the first six bouts, got pins from Averi Gable (127), Memphis Twoey (133), Guenot (145) and Hunter Kephart (152).

Bald Eagle Area reached the semifinals with a 57-10 romp over Marion Center on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at home. Purcell (114), Lomison (139), Surovec (152) and Chayse Kellander (172) recorded falls for BEA. 

Marion Center beat River Valley, 48-23, in the first round to advance to the quarterfinal against BEA. 

The Eagles finished the regular season with a 10-5 record. They’ll start preparing for the District 6 Tournament, which is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb.15, at the Altoona Fieldhouse. 

The Mounties followed the loss to Penns Valley with a 36-24 win over Mount Union on Thursday, Jan. 30, at home. Bradley Peters (114) and Twoey (133) had the only pins for P-O. 

P-O (12-7) was to close out the regular season with three road dual meets — Monday, Feb. 3, at Huntingdon, Tuesday, Feb. 4, at West Branch and Wednesday, Feb. 5, at DuBois. Results of these matches were not available at the time of The Gazette’s publishing deadline.

LITTLE LIONS FALL IN SEMIFINALS

State College was stopped short of making the District 6 Class 3A Duals championship match with a 44-18 loss to eventual champion Central Mountain in the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Central Mountain. 

Asher Cunningham (215) had State College’s only pin. 

Central Mountain went on to win the title with a 39-28 win over Altoona. Altoona reached the finals with a 41-26 win over Mifflin County.

The Little Lions (5-4) has only one more scheduled dual meet — Tuesday, Feb. 11, against Ridgway at home. 

RED RAIDERS WIN SHARON DUALS

Bellefonte went 5-0 and captured the team title of the Sharon Duals on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Sharon High School.

The Red Raiders beat Beaver Area, 60-6, Chartiers-Houston, 53-21, Ellwood City, 46-19, Burgettstown, 45-28 and Jefferson-Morgan, 44-27, in the championship match. 

Bellefonte, which finished with an 11-5 record, will prepare for the District 6 Class 3A Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Altoona Fieldhouse.

P-O’S HUNT, BEA’S CRESTANI WIN TITLES

Philipsburg-Osceola’s Charli Hunt (136) and Bald Eagle Area’s Grace Crestani (190) captured titles at the Bald Eagle Area Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Hunt finished off her day by winning by a 15-0 technical fall over Shikellamy’s Ryleigh Ziants in 2:00. Crestani won her title with a pin of Juniata’s Katelynn Krepps in 51 seconds.

The Lady Eagles also had two runners-up in Eden Eveleth (106) and Addison Tice (112), both of whom were pinned. BEA’s Lily Spicer (100) placed fourth. Bellefonte’s Ella Johnsonbaugh (136) and P-O’s Daisy Glessner (235) were sixth. 

The Lady Eagles finished fifth in the 34-team tournament with 94 points. Dallastown (189) won the team title, while Boiling Springs (139.5) was second.

Johnsonbaugh (136) placed fifth in the Williamsport Showcase on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Williamsport High School.

BEA, Bellefonte, P-O and State College are preparing for the District 5-6-9 Tournament on Friday, Feb. 21, at First Summit Arena in Johnstown.
