STATE COLLEGE — Mount Nittany Health recently announced that Dr. Mallory Schaffer has joined the sports medicine team and will see patients in the Penns Valley area. Schaffer earned a bachelor of science in biology from The College of William and Mary and a doctor of medicine from Penn State University College of Medicine. She completed both her family medicine residency and her primary care sports medicine fellowship at UPMC St. Margaret in Pittsburgh. “Mount Nittany Health has a strong reputation, and I am excited for the opportunity to practice both sports medicine and family medicine to help serve this community,” said Schaffer. Pursuing a career in medicine was natural, said Schaffer. “As an athlete, I had my share of injuries and first learned medicine from the perspective of a patient,” she said. “For me, it’s important to approach each patient as if I’m treating a family member. I want to work with them to do what’s in their best interest and be their advocate.” In her sports medicine practice, Schaffer takes special interest in performing ultrasound-guided procedures and managing non-operative orthopedic concerns. While in the family medicine clinic, she has additional passions for women’s health and dermatology, such as providing contraceptive services and conducting skin biopsies. A former First Team Division I All-American collegiate athlete, Schaffer exchanged her soccer cleats for running shoes, a bike and swim goggles to complete a half Iron Man Triathlon. She also enjoys going for hikes and playing card games with friends and family.
