LEWISTOWN — State College had the lead with under two minutes left and a chance to win in regulation but couldn’t quite finish off second-seeded Mifflin County and fell in the District 6 Class 6A girls basketball semifinals, 64-49, on Feb. 20.
The Lady Little Lions finished the season 10-13.
The game was a rematch of last year’s District 6 championship game, and, much like last year’s postseason clash, the Lady Huskies turned to Marissa Gingrich when the chips were down, and the 5-foot-7 all-state senior guard put her team on her shoulders and sent them into the finals by delivering 37 points and 14 rebounds.
Jordyn Steindl paced State College with 19 points. Jess Hawbaker added 11 and Carley Donnell 9.
The Lady Little Lions trailed by 1 at the half and 4 entering the fourth quarter but took the lead less than a minute into the final stanza on a 3-pointer and then a conventional bucket by Steindl.
Diana Tsarnakova and Lydia Tate also scored to break ties and put the Lady Little Lions ahead by 2 late in regulation, only for Mifflin County to even the count.
Gingrich scored 6 quick points in overtime and the Lady Huskies pulled away. They’ll try to defend their district crown when they meet No. 1 seed Altoona at Mount Aloysius College on Feb. 24.
Amelia Leister also scored in double figures for the Lady Huskies, netting 13 points.
