no description

Karli Short, the 26-year-old daughter of Penn State trustee and former Nittany Lion and NFL linebacker Brandon Short, was shot and killed this week in McKeesport.

Police were called to the scene at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday and found Short with a gunshot wound to her head, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“My heart is broken,” Brandon Short wrote in a Facebook post on Monday night. “I’ve lost the light of my life, my oldest daughter Karli passed away this morning in a senseless act of gun violence. The love she had was so pure and true. The world lost a beautiful soul. Thank you to everyone who has reached out and please keep our family in your prayers as we struggle through this difficult time.”

Short told WTAE in Pittsburgh that his daughter was five months pregnant.

The case is being investigated by Allegheny County police Homicide Unit.

Penn State football coach James Franklin opened his press conference on Tuesday by expressing condolences to Short and his family.

“I would just like to send a message out to Brandon Short and his family and pass along our love and support and thoughts and prayers for him and his family,” Franklin said.

Penn State President Eric Barron and Board of Trustees Chairman Matthew Schuyler also expressed sympathies on behalf of the university.

“Our hearts go out to Trustee Brandon Short and Karli Short’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Barron said in a statement. “My heart is heavy as I think about the traumatic effect this tragic loss of a young person will have on the entire McKeesport community. Our condolences go out to Brandon and the entire Short family.”

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Trustee Brandon Short’s daughter, Karli Short, in her passing,” Schuyler said. “That her life was cut short too soon as a result of an act of violence is a tragedy for Karli and her family and friends, and a great loss to the members of the McKeesport community. Our sympathy goes out to all who knew her best and loved her most.”

A native of McKeesport, Brandon Short was an All-American linebacker and two-time captain during his time at Penn State from 1997-99. A fourth round draft pick in 2000, he went on to a seven-year NFL career with the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers.

He was first elected by alumni to the Penn State Board of Trustees and is now in his second term. After the NFL, Short began his career in real estate investment banking and investment management and is now executive director and portfolio manager at PGIM Real Estate.
