Golf Classic to Benefit Healing Garden at Mount Nittany Medical Center

Sure, it’s about the sport — the love of golf. But it’s more than that.

Participants in the 24th annual Mount Nittany Medical Center Golf Classic will help raise funds for a healing garden at the hospital, which will provide stress relief for patients, families, physicians, and staff and offer a quiet and beautiful space for the community.

Groundbreaking for the garden is slated for the fall. It will be located next to the Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion, and accessible through the main hospital lobby and the Shaner Cancer Pavilion.

Each year, Mount Nittany Health exceeds its fundraising goals, according to Melissa Aungst, foundation specialist with The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center.

“The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center has long occupied this late-in-the-tournament-season spot. That’s why I am both amazed and grateful that we exceed our participation and fundraising goals each year,” she says. “Our golf classic seems to be a favorite of our business partners, community, physicians, and the many volunteers who help us on golf day.”

Registration for the golf classic will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Penn State Golf Courses with an 11 a.m. shotgun start.

Attendees can participate through volunteering, sponsorship, and individual golfer opportunities.

One golfer will be selected to choose between a prize of $10,000 or a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze.

Team prizes for each flight will be awarded to the 16 winning teams placing first through fourth in both net and gross scores on each course.

Prizes will also be awarded for each course for the longest drive, straightest drive, closest to the pin and longest putt. Additionally, the event will feature a closest to the pin contest with cash prizes.

All participating golfers will enjoy a round of golf, a commemorative gift courtesy of Rex Energy, an on-course food station courtesy of Rotelli, a boxed lunch courtesy of Subway, post-play reception, dinner and awards ceremony sponsored by C.A. Curtze Company, and in-cart refreshments and snacks courtesy of Bittner Vending, Pepsi and Roaring Spring Water.

The event has raised more than $1.8 million since 1991.
