Joan (Rachau) Smalley

Joan Rachau Smalley, of Grampian, formerly of Spring Mills, passed away after a fight with cancer January 1, 2021 at Penn Highlands Hospital in Dubois.  She was 62.  Born August 11, 1958 in Bellefonte, Joan was a daughter of the late Guy H. Rachau and Doris M. “Kerstetter” Rachau who survives. 

Also surviving is one daughter, Brooke Jodon (Todd) of Spring Mills; one brother, David M. Rachau of Spring Mills; two grandchildren, Connor Lee and Kaitlyn Marie Jodon, and a special cousin, Tony Foltz (Robin) of Coburn and their children, Shaunnah, Emilye, and Jon Foltz.  In addition to her father, Joan was preceded in death by her son Jeremy Lee Boone in 1998.

Joan was a 1976 graduate of Penns Valley Area High School.  She completed one year at Penn State University before beginning her family.  She worked as a financial consultant in State College for 13 years while raising her children.  Most recently, she workded as a certified in-home caregiver.  She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Millheim and enjoyed spending time with her cats.

 Joan will be laid to rest in Farmers Mills Union Cemetery during a private graveside service.  Contributions in her memory may be given to The Hope Fund of Penns Valley, PO Box 427, Centre Hall, PA 16828.
