Armand L. ("Bus") Shaner, 88, of State College, son of the late Alma Hafer and Warren Shaner, professor emeritus and coach, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, after a long illness.

A native of Pottstown, Mr. Shaner was a district star in both basketball and baseball at Pottstown High School and later was inducted into the Pottstown Sports Hall of Fame.

During WWII, he was a member of the 317 Troop Carrier serving as an Army Air Corps mechanic stationed in the South Pacific where he earned a bronze star.

He was awarded an athletic scholarship to Lock Haven State Teachers College. There he met his future wife, the late Marion Fredericks. He continued to compete in basketball and baseball at Lock Haven and graduated with a teaching degree in 1947.

As newlyweds, the Shaners moved to Titusville where "Bus" taught Physical Education and coached basketball for many successful seasons. In 1959, he earned his MS from Springfield College and began course work at Penn State. In 1960, he accepted a position at Lafayette College where he taught, coached, and was made Dean of Students.

In 1967, Mr. Shaner took a position in the athletic department of Penn State where he became director of the Natatorium. He was president of the PA Aquatics council, founder and inductee into the PA Swimming Hall of Fame, and chairperson of PA AAHPER aquatics council before retiring from the University in 1985. Mr. Shaner was an avid Penn State supporter in both the arts and athletics and enjoyed attending many events there.

Upon retirement, he traveled extensively in Europe and spent many winters in Venice, Fla. His hobbies included golfing, swimming, gardening, listening to big band music, and visiting family and friends.

He is survived by two sons Thomas (Carolyn) and David (Susan), and five grandchildren, Laurie Shaner Quinn, Julie, Christie, Morgann, and Jacob Shaner. Also surviving are sisters, Arline Egolf, Phyllis Yergey, Anita Rutledge, Kathleen Bohner, and brothers, Alan (Scal), David, half brother Richard Shaner and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at State College Presbyterian Church, 132 W. Beaver Ave., State College.
