Beatrice Rachel Scullion Smith (Betty) Lazar, 95, passed away peacefully, August 21, 2018, at home. Betty was born on July 17, 1923 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of the late Edward and Hazel Della (Scullion) Smith. She was carried as a babe in arms into Maine, living in Sanford, ME until she married her husband Joe in 1943. She lived in Oceanside, and Babylon, NY until 1970 moving to Hopewell, NJ.
During WWll, she worked for Grumann, located in Long Island, NY, as a riveter of aircraft for the Navy. She liked to be called Rosie The Riveter and marked the inner skin of the aircraft as such wishing the pilots good luck on their missions.
Betty was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a High School Class mother for four years. Betty loved to sew and design clothes for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her friends. She loved to knit and crochet, especially baby blankets that were her blessing to all babies. She continued designing pillows and handmade gifts almost daily.
Poetry was her passion both to read and compose, many of which are in a handily nearby notebook. Many of her poems have been published in the local newspapers. She also loved to create stories to relate to her children and grandchildren. She could have been a stand-up comic. She had a limited repertoire of jokes, but loved to tell them to anyone who would listen.
She was troubled with arthritis, but handled it with some difficulty. Betty and Joe moved to the Milesburg, PA area in 2017.
Betty is survived by her husband, Joe of 75 + years, her four children, JoAnne Lazar-Barndt, Lawrence Lazar, Roxanne Miller and Suzanne Duntley, 12 grandchildren, Tae Cha Yu, Betty Jo Ramos, Carrie Kafrouni, Colby Ramos, Patricia LoCicero, Amy Miller Harding, Clancy Griffin, Jaimy Lazar-Horner, Joie Griffin-Horst, Stefanie Frankovich, Luke Miller and Christine Henderson, 32 great-grandchildren and her sister-in-law, Loretta Smith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Luanne Lazar and her brother, James Hunter Smith.
Arrangements are under the direction of The Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, 201 Spring St., Milesburg, PA.
