Betty J. Williams, 83, of Centre Hall, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the Wynwood House in Centre Hall.

She was born July 23, 1927 in Bellefonte, a daughter of the late George C. and Mary Taylor Johnson.

On June 6, 1948 she married Ernest “Bud” Williams who preceded her in death June 4, 1993.

Betty graduated from State College High School with the class of 1945.

Starting her working career early in life, she worked at Johnson’s Store in Centre Hall, which was owned by her family for many years. Betty was later employed at the Pennsylvania State University and worked as a secretary at HRB in State College for twenty one years. In addition to her full time jobs, she worked as a bookkeeper for her husband’s construction business; and owned and operated Johnson’s Bingo Stand at Grange Fair for many years.

Mrs. Williams was a member of Sprucetown United Methodist Church where she served as pianist for many years; and as church secretary for six years; as well as serving as treasurer of Penns Valley United Methodist Charge. She was a social member of the American Legion at Pleasant Gap, and a former member of Progress Grange in Centre Hall.

Music was an important part of her life especially enjoying playing the piano. Her musical inclinations were also evidenced by her ability to play the accordion and by her ability to tap dance. Reading, embroidering and latch hook work were other hobbies she enjoyed.

Surviving are a son Barry Williams and his wife Carol of Pleasant Gap; four grandchildren, Dawn Hall, Heather Haines, Sherri Ard and Christine Sharer; twelve great grandchildren; and a sister Georgette (Georgie) S. Royer of South Carolina.

In addition to her parents, and husband she was preceded in death by a son Kim G. Williams in 1980.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 p. m. Friday, April 22, 2011, at Sprucetown United Methodist Church, on Upper Georges Valley Road, near Potters Mills with the Reverend F. Jeffrey Mugridge officiating. Friends will be received in the Fellowship Hall of the church immediately following the memorial service. Burial in Centre County Memorial Park will be private at the convenience of the family.
