Clair N. Knecht, 86 of Bellefonte, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2011 at The Fairways at Brookline Village. He was born on February 17, 1925, in Lock Haven, he was a son of the late Walter N. and Margaret E. Bitner Knecht.

On November 4, 1945 in Howard, he married Betty R. Harter, who survives at home. He was a 1943 graduate of Lock Haven High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1945-1946 in World War II.

He farmed from 1946 to 1971. From 1965-1969, he served in the security department at Penn State. From 1970 until his retirement in 1967, he was a supervisor in the housing department at Penn State.

He was the director of the Eastern Milk Producers and the Eastern States, and was the director and past president of the Walker Twp. Water Association. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Retired Mixed Bowling League in Pennsylvania and in Florida. He was a member of the Pleasant Gap Fire Co. #1. In his younger years, he was a member of the Future Farmers of America and the Young Farmers Association.

He and his wife spent their winters in Florida from 1990 to 2009. He enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and Hawaii.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William L. Knecht (Pegge), formerly of Williamsport, of Pine Knoll Shores, N.C.; three sisters, Helen J. Reish, Evelyn Tupper and Isabel Eisenhaur; one brother, Ray A. Knecht; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Marie; a son, Earl N.; a brother, Lawall; and four sisters, Elizabeth Courter, Mildred Coakley, Mary Louise Fox and Maguerite McGill.

He was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hublersburg, where he served as a deacon and as an elder.

Visitation will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2011 and from 10 – 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at The Trinity United Church of Christ, 355 Hublersburg Rd., Bellefonte. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the church with the Rev. Jeff Munnis officiating. Burial will be in Jacksonville Cemetery.
