Edward John Rogus, 89, of Snow Shoe, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Mt Nittany Medical Center. Born on January 16, 1923, in Clarence, he was the son of the late Paul G. & Victoria Wesoly Rogus. On November 10, 1951, at St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church in Clarence, he married the love of his life, Mary K. Passuello, who passed away on July 11, 2001.
Ed attended the Clarence school. He joined the Army Air Corps on December 8, 1942 and had basic training in Miami Beach, FL. He traveled to Chanute Field, IL to attend parachute school for eight weeks, followed by going to Jefferson Barracks, MO. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, AK while the Japanese occupied two neighboring islands, Kiska and Attu. He returned to Clovis, NM to help train crews for the B-29’s. He was honorably discharged on November 28, 1945. For his years of service, he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon w/2 Bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Ed worked at Halls Brothers until 1963 when he joined Cerro Metal Products. He worked various jobs at Cerro, retiring from the shipping department in 1987.
Ed was a lifelong member of the Queen of Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Clarence, where he was a member of the Rosary Society. He also served as an usher for 36 years. In 1997, he joined the Knights of Columbus Society and was a Fourth-Degree Member. He was a member of the Clarence American Legion, Post 813, and a life member of the Clarence Moose Club #1565. Through out the 1990’s, he served in the Snow Shoe Volunteer Fire Company as Fire Police Captain.
Ed enjoyed hunting, football, cooking, and gardening. He also did some carpentry as a part time hobby.
Ed is survived by his children; Edward P. Rogus and his wife, Carol, of Austin, TX, John P. Rogus and his wife, Sandra of Sao Paulo, Brazil, James S. Rogus and his wife, Pamela of Franklin, PA, Joseph A. Rogus and his wife, Laurie of Chester NJ, Maryann A. Castaneda and her husband, Pedro of Cedar Park, TX, Paul M. Rogus and his wife Martha, of Warren, PA and Dennis T. Rogus of Raleigh, NC. Also surviving are his 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Along with his parents and wife, Ed is preceded in death by his five sisters; Mary, Sophie, Ann, Pauline, and Helen and by his four brothers; Andrew, Kazimer (Charles), Paul, and David. Ed was the last of his generation.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, March 25, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8pm, with a rosary at 7:45pm, at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, 106 W. Sycamore St. Snow Shoe. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 11am at the Queen of Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Clarence with Father Lubomir J. Strecok officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Clarence.
