Elmer Bryan "Whitey" Cartwright, 82, of Jersey Shore, formerly of Bellefonte, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, in Jersey Shore.
He was born Oct. 2, 1926, in Howard, the son of the late Earl M. and Pearl Bryan Cartwright. His wife, the former Jane M. McClellan, preceded him in death Sept. 1, 2007. They were married July 4, 1948. He was a graduate of Bellefonte High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1945-46, in the Liberation of the Philippines with the Occupation of Japan. He was co-owner of Cartwright Clothing Store for Men and Boysin Bellefonte until 1974. Mr. Cartwright was a charter member of Faith United Methodist Church in Bellefonte He was a life member of Bellefonte VFW Post 1600, and also a life member of Bellefonte American Legion Post 33. He enjoyed hunting.
Surviving are a son, the Rev. Richard B. Cartwright and his wife, JoAnne, of Huntingdon; a daughter-in-law, Terri Cartwright, of Hanover; two brothers, Earl N. Cartwright andHassel E. Cartwright,both of York; and five grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. Dr. Thomas K. Cartwright, and a sister, Ellen Otterbein.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at Faith United Methodist Church, 512 Hughes St., Bellefonte, with the Rev. Arlene Beechert, the Rev. Andrew Morgan, the Rev. Dr. Dennis Otto and the Rev. William Raker officiating. Friends will be receivedfrom 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at the church. Burial will be in Schencks Cemetery, Howard Township, Centre County. Memorial contributions may be made to The Rev. Dr. Thomas K. Cartwright Scholarship Fund, in care of 12th Street United Methodist Church, 313 12th St., Huntingdon, PA 16652. Arrangements are under the direction of Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, Milesburg.
