Elwood A. Way, 96, of State College, died Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Foxdale Village.

Born March 11, 1920, in Halfmoon Township, he was the son of the late Darlington H. and Ina A. Whitely Way.

On August 2, 1947, he married Emily Hobbs who survives.

In addition to his wife, Elwood is survived by 4 children: David E. Way and his wife Terry of Elkton, MD, Donald H. Way of Warriors Mark, Brooks A. Way and his wife Sharon of Port Matilda, and Stanley W. Way and his wife Anne of Jersey Village, TX; 7 grandchildren: Megan Coopey, Sara Haegeli, Benjamin Way, Edwin Way, Stephanie Hansen, Sean Way, and Jessica Way; and 4 great-grandchildren: Emma Coopey, Katie Coopey, Evan Coopey and Nico Haegeli.

He is also survived by brothers Roger (and wife Mary) and Ralph (and wife Kamilla), and sister Rebecca. He was pre-deceased by brothers Morris, Joseph, and Robert.

Elwood was a 1939 graduate of Port Matilda High School and attended The Penn State University. Elwood was a lifetime member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and a longtime member of State College Friends Meeting.

Elwood was the owner and operator of Way Fruit Farm in Stormstown for over 30 years. In addition Elwood served on the original school board of the State College Area School district; on the board of directors of the Community Bank of Port Matilda; on the board and was president of the State Hort Association of PA; he was a longtime leader of the Halfmoon 4-H ag club; he was a charter member of the Centre County Ag Forum; a longtime member of the Centre County PA Farm Bureau; and a 75 year member of Halfmoon Grange.

In his retirement he worked on Halfmoon and Quaker history and authored a book titled “Quakers of Centre County Pennsylvania.” In 2005 Elwood and Emily moved from Halfmoon to Foxdale Village in State College.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Foxdale Village in the Meeting Room (2nd floor), 550 E. Marylyn Ave. State College, 16801. Burial will be at Halfmoon Valley Friends Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
