Gene Ray Smith, 79, of rural Spring Mills, formerly of Boalsburg, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Centre Crest in Bellefonte.

He was born March 19, 1934 in Tusseyville a son of late W. Ray and Bessie McClellan Smith

From November 23, 1956 to November 5, 1958, he served in active duty in the U. S. Army, with Battery B 5th MSC Battalion, 6th Artillery, spending one and one half years in Germany working with Guided Missiles. From November 1958 until April 30, 1963 he served in the U. S. army Reserve earning the rank of Specialist 5.

Mr. Smith managed the service station for McClellan Motors from 1960 to 1971, In 1971 he went to work for Miller Motor Company in Centre Hall as the manager of the auto body shop, working there until his retirement. He also worked for Don Dreibelbis Auctioneering, and enjoyed attending public sales.

Gene served as a dedicated caretaker/maintenance manager for Boalsburg cemetery for more than 30 years.

He was a former member of the V. F. W. in Pine Grove Mills.

Surviving Gene are two sisters, Nancy Stover of Spring Mills, and Doris Leitch of Madisonburg; and one brother, Joseph M. Smith of Boalsburg.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernadine Homan and Ann McCool.

Friends will be received from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, on Saturday July 6, 2013, at Mark D. Heintzelman funeral and Cremation Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall, PA. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Reverend Julia Sprenkle officiating. Burial will be in Boalsburg Cemetery, Boalsburg.
