Gertrude W. Wheeland “Gerty” 87 of rural Spring Mills died Wednesday April 22, 2015 at home.

She was born February 13, 1928 in rural Spring Mills, a daughter of the late Charles and Blanche Weaver. In 1946 she married Mills C. Wheeland who preceded her in death on February 24 1998.

Throughout her life she had many jobs. She worked at Penn Wayland Drug Store, Duffys, Tavern, Thrift Drug Store and later at the J.C. Penney Catalog Center in Westerly Parkway until her retirement.

Earlier in life she enjoyed the family vacations to fish in Canada always making sure fond memories were made.

She was a large supporter of the Egg Hill Church and served on the conservancy and made sure the annual homecoming took place each September.

Her greatest joy in life was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved her family so very much. Gerty was always glad for company and welcomed many into her home throughout the years. Everyone felt at home in Gerty's house.

Gerty loved to read until her eyes would no longer allow her to see as well as she once could.

Gerty was an excellent cook feeding friends and friends of friends throughout the years. She especially enjoyed the holidays when everyone would come to 'the farm' to enjoy good food, family, and friendship.

Gerty was dearly loved and will be forever missed by her family and extended family. We find comfort in knowing she is now reunited with family and friends who preceded her in death. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her only brother Jack and a nephew Gary Weaver whom she and Mills raised.

Gerty is survived by four daughters, Erin Seprish of SnowShoe, Holly Gilliland of Boalsburg, Beth Kitchen of Blanchard and Jackie Glasgow of Millheim. And three sons, Daniel Wheeland of Spring Mills, Mills Wheeland Jr. of Colyer and David Weaver of Bellefonte. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, and her faithful companion dog Sammy.

Gerty was always easy to talk to and always willing to help anyone who was in need. Gerty loved her farm and enjoyed going to the barn when she was able.

Gerty was born on the farm and passed away on the farm which was always what she wanted.

A private reception for friends and family will be from six to eight Saturday April 25 2015 at Mark D. Heintzelmen Funeral Service 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall.
