Gloria I. Humphreys, 80, of Oak Hall, PA, died May 20, 2014, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, PA, after a year- long battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family.

Born April 16, 1934, in Pleasant Gap, she was the daughter of the late G. Musser and Ellen Allen Irvin.

Gloria’s beautiful, loving spirit touched all who knew her, as did her engaging sense of humor and ability to talk endlessly. She had a zest for life and a positive outlook which embodied her strength and commitment to family and friends.

Gloria was a 1952 graduate of Centre Hall-Potter High School where she was active in numerous sports and activities. She graduated with a degree in Health and Physical Education from The Pennsylvania State University in 1959, and later followed with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught in the Kittanning and Penns Valley, PA school districts before finishing her teaching career as an ice skating instructor at Penn State.

Gloria was a former president and secretary of the Penn State University Women’s Club, an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and an active member in many social and charitable organizations. She especially loved her Altar Guild group at St. Andrew’s, and her Antique Group with the PSU Woman’s Club. Gloria was exceptionally charitable, and this was never more evident than her years of participation in the annual Centre County Youth Service Bureau’s “On the Fly” event. She never lost her fly, always caught a trout, and made the event a better experience for all of the participants.

Gloria is survived by her husband of 57 years, Joseph B. Humphreys; two daughters, Johanna R. Humphreys, of Dillsburg, PA, Dolores H. Barnes and her husband, Andrew W., of Rockville, MD, a sister, Linda I. O’Neill, of State College, PA, a brother, Richard Irvin, of Zion, PA, and two grandchildren, Maxwell and Madeline Barnes of Rockville, MD.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College.

Memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2014 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 208 W. Foster Avenue State College, PA with Father Richard Wall officiating.
