Herbert Dwain Cahalen, 85 years, died Tuesday, July 16, 2013. He was born in Edinburgh, Ind. on Jan. 12, 1928, the son of Herbert Roscue Cahalen and Catherine Cahalen, of Franklin, Ind.

When he was six, Herbert Roscue, his father, was killed in an automobile accident and the family moved to Iola, Kan. During the later stages of World War II, Herbert enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific region. At the end of the war he was involved in the two Atomic Bomb tests, Able and Baker, in the Bikini Atolls aboard the USS Marsh. Following his enlistment, he moved to Pennsylvania to attend Barber School. He met and married Patricia L. Hartle in 1950. Herbert and Patricia had three children, Herbert, Linda and Christopher. The family settled in State College where Herb opened a number of Barber Shops to include Herb's Barber Shop, The Penn State Barber Shop and finally the Allenway Barber Shop. After the passing of his loving wife, Patricia, in 1997, he devoted most of his retirement time to fishing and hunting and enjoying his many friends at the American Legions in State College and Center Hall.

He is survived by his son, Herbert C., residing in Maryland and Montana and his daughter, Linda L. Catherman, residing in Wisconsin. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Stephanie Harry, of Maryland, and Chad and Erik Catherman, of Wisconsin; and a great grandson, Logan Harry.

All services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Entombment will occur at the Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, 226 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Centre Hall, PA.
