Obituary of Irene Cummins, 85

Irene K. Cummins, 85, of rural Spring Mills, died Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Mount Nittany Medical Center at State College.

She was born October 14, 1928 in Chester County, a daughter of the late Edgar Koons and Sarah Mabel Mertz.

On October 22, 1949 she married Frank W. Cummins who survives at home. She raised her family in Paoli, PA and retired to Spring Mills in 1989.

Mrs. Cummins graduated from Chester County Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. Through the years she remained an active member of the school's Alumnae Association.

In retirement she enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society and the Young at Heart Club, where she met her great friend Barb Breon.

Among the things she enjoyed most were gardening, homemaking, and traveling, but what she treasured most was spending time with family and friends.

Surviving in addition to her husband Frank are two daughters, Shelley Nilson (Eric) of Allison Park and Shirley Zwierzyna (Stan) of Elverson; one son, Frank Cummins (Kathy) of Honey Brook; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren; one sister, Elaine Lipton (Merrill) of Belton, TX; one brother, Hiram “Bud” Koons (Joan) of Martinsburg; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will begin with the receiving of friends at 1:00 p. m. Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall. Opportunities to remember and celebrate her life by sharing stories with family and friends will begin promptly at 2:00 pm. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
