Jean Oppenheimer Britton died Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Mt. Nittany Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born July 8, 1923 in Columbia, Missouri, she was the daughter of the late Julius J. and Florence Greer Oppenheimer.

Jean grew up in Louisville, Kentucky where her father was a faculty member and Dean at the University of Louisville. She graduated from the University in 1945, earned her Master's degree from Columbia University and her Doctorate from the University of Chicago.

She married Joseph H. Britton in June 1948 and shortly thereafter moved to State College, where she taught for many years in Penn State's College of Education.

She and her husband coauthored a number of research articles and a book on Gerontology. Jean was a member of the State College Presbyterian Church and PEO Sisterhood.

After retiring from Penn State, Joe and Jean traveled the world extensively and enjoyed many summers with family and friends at their cottage in Bay View, Michigan. They moved to Foxdale Village in 1988. There, Jean devoted many years to her family, friends, and especially to the care of her beloved husband, who survives her.

She is also survived by her son John, his wife Sara, and three grandchildren, Emma, Paul, and Evan. Jean was dearly loved by us all and we will miss her.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County, Inc., 1155 Zion Road, Bellefonte, PA 16823.

A memorial service will be scheduled at Foxdale Village at a later date.
