Obituary of Joan Summers , 68

Joan C. Summers, 68, of State College, died Friday, December 11, 2015 at M.S. Hershey Medical Center.

She was born October 25, 1947, in Philipsburg, PA, a daughter of the late Elmer and Jane Wilson Summers.

Joan served as an Administrative Assistant at Penn State until her retirement in 2007. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, her family was the love of her life. She delighted in attending concerts, plays and sporting events in which her children and grandchildren were involved. Always putting others before herself, Joan was an active member at St. Paul's United Methodist Church where she volunteered with several groups. She enjoyed State College and Penn State football, baking and spending time with family. She was an avid supporter of many charities including Children's Miracle Network and St. Judes.

Joan is survived by one daughter, Michelle (Jeff) Helffrich of State College; two sons, David (Jean) Patrick of Williamsport, Scott (Tracy Michele) Binkley of State College; one sister, Deborah (Roger) Shimmel of Philipsburg; five grandchildren, Mark, Ryan, Kayla, Taylor, and Kendall; two nieces, Ashley (Steve), Lindsay, and one nephew, Justin.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul’s United Methodist church, 220 E. College Ave, State College, with the Reverend Eric Shafer officiating.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
