Joe Robert Seymore of State College passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, February 8, 2018. Born February 24, 1926 in Anderson, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Clayton Claude Seymore and Emma (Herrin) Seymore. He married Martha Jean (Anderson) Seymore.
In addition to his wife Jean of 67 years, Joe is survived by his daughter Donna Brooks and her husband Rick of Gardner, Massachusetts: son Kevin Seymore and wife Shirley of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina: and son Bill Seymore and wife Diane Croyle of Orlean, Virginia. Joe has eleven surviving grandchildren and nine great grandchildren
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his siblings Clayton Claude Seymore Jr., Margaret (Seymore) Burnette, Louise (Seymore) Busbin, Harold Seymore and stepsister Sue Jenkins Carlton.
Joe was a 1943 graduate of Anderson High School in Anderson, South Carolina. He joined the U.S. Navy after high school and served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years. Joe served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II. At the conclusion of Joe’s naval career, he retired from the Navy while teaching Navy ROTC at Penn State University. After retiring from the Navy, Joe worked for Corning Glass Works in State College, PA until his second retirement.
Joe’s hobbies included following Penn State sports, Pittsburg Pirates baseball and Pittsburg Steelers football. He umpired softball for forty plus years. He was a certified member of the Amateur Softball Association Umpires .
Joe was an active member of the USS Stribling DD867 Destroyer Reunion Group and was the only member to have attended every annual reunion through 2017 since the group was founded in 1986. He was a proud member of the U.S. Navy Fleet Reserve Association ,Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation.
Joe loved spending time with his family over the holidays and hosted family New Year’s celebrations annually. For many years the family would do annual road trips to South Carolina to visit relatives and Joe would serve as tour guide, driver and navigator.

Arrangements are under the care of Heintzelman Funeral Home.
Services and visitations will be held at the Heintzelman Funeral Home in State College, PA. on Friday, February 16, 2018.
Visitations will be from 1:30pm to 3:00pm and 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
A memorial including military honors will be held from 3:00pm to 3:30pm.
