Obituary of John Leiter , 93

John Glenn Leiter, 93, of Bellefonte, passed away Monday, June 22, 2015, at the Centre Crest Nursing Home in Bellefonte. Born on December 27, 1921, in Maitland, PA, he was the son of the late Austin Emory Leiter, Jr. and Margaretta Emma Wagner Leiter. On October 18, 1946, in Lewistown at the First Baptist Church, he married Betty Louise Davis Leiter who survives at home.

He attended the Yeagertown Area High School until 1939.

John was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lewistown for over 65 years.

He was a member of the Bellefonte Free and Accepted Masons Lodge # 268 for over 50 years, the Altoona Valley Scottish Rite Consistory, the United Commercial Travelers for over 68 years, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Centre Forest # 129, and a lifetime member of the Undines Fire Company #2.

John served as a Private First Class in the United States Army. He served as a Machine Gunner during the European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign. For his service he received the EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Battle Stars, the Distinguished Unit Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster for service and being wounded in action on June 22, 1944 and March 21, 1945.

He worked at Weis Market for over 40 years until he retired in 1980 as the manager of the Bellefonte Store.

Along with his wife John is survived by three sons; Glenn E. Leiter and his wife Vickie of Bellefonte, John A. Leiter and his wife Rhonda of Bellefonte, and Joseph A. Leiter also of Bellefonte, seven grandchildren; Jason E. Leiter, Justin T. Leiter, Joseph E. Leiter, Adam C. Leiter, Andrew R. L. Leiter, Nicholas A. Leiter, and Jordan R. Sterrett and six great-grandchildren; Jeremy E. Leiter, Justine E. Leiter, Adelle S. Leiter, Jacob E. Leiter, Christian W. Leiter, and Brielle G. Leiter.

Along with his parents he is preceded in death by six brothers; Robert A. Leiter, Carl W. Leiter, Donald J. Leiter, Leon D. Leiter, Harold E. Leiter, and Richard W. Leiter and one sister; Helen M. Leiter. John was the last of his generation.

There will be a public visitation held Thursday, June 25, 2015, from 10am until 12pm, the time of the service, at the Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held Thursday, June 25, 2015, at 12pm, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Carter of the First Baptist Church in Lewistown officiating.
Burial will follow at the Lind Memorial Cemetery of Lewistown.
