John W. “Jack” Lewis, 91, of State College, died Friday, November 22, 2013, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.

Born June 8, 1922, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late John M. and Alma Witt Lewis. On October 29, 1960, he married Elinor Childs, who survives.

Also surviving are two children, John C. Lewis of Feeding Hills, MA. and Gordon W. Lewis and his wife, Eileen, of Branchburg, NJ; three grandchildren, Courtney, Kaylee and Kristen Lewis. He was preceded in death by one brother, David K. Lewis, on April 29, 2013.

Jack was a 1943 graduate of Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve) Cleveland, OH. He was employed at the Harvard Underwater Sound Lab during WWII. He came to Penn State following the war when the Lab known as the Ordinance Research Lab was moved to PSU. While at Penn State he obtained an MS degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1954 he became a member of the technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories, Whippany, NJ. He retired from the Laboratories in 1990. In 1991 he and his wife moved to State College where they have enjoyed the many opportunities offered to retirees. Jack especially enjoyed singing with the State College Choral Society, working on his golf game and volunteering for the Nittany Valley Symphony.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery, Mendham, NJ. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nittany Valley Symphony.
