Joseph D. Slenker, 97, of Centre Hall died Monday, December 23, 2013 at his residence.

He was born July 11, 1916, in Lock Haven, PA, the son of Laura (Welshans) and Francis Slenker.

Joe was preceded in death by, his wife Alice, parents, three brothers and two sisters. Joe is survived by his two sons, Joseph S. (wife Becky) and Frank T. Slenker of Centre Hall, PA. and a daughter Mary E. Martin of Arcadia, FL. Also surviving Joe, four granddaughters, Amy Slenker- Smith, Catherine Reichley, Christina Mazgajewski, and Carey Devine, and six great grandchildren, Zachary, Alexzander, Elayna, Amber, Ariah, and Jacob.

Joe married Alice Spyker on June 10, 1939. Joe worked for Piper Aircraft, prior to serving in WW II as a member of a flight crew in the Army Air Corps, seeing action in the Pacific Theatre. After the war, Joe and Alice moved to Centre Hall where he worked for Penn State in the Chemical Engineering Department. He retired in the 1980’s. Joe also worked on the Electricians Crew at the Grange Fair for many years. He was a life time member of State College Elks Lodge #1600 running the Bingo program for ten years. As well as a member of the American Legion Old Fort Post 779.He was an avid Penn State’s sports fan and was a season ticket holder for Nittany Lion’s football, and supported the Phillies.

Joe was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Centre Hall. His funeral service will be held on December 26th, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church 127 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall, with the Reverend Judith Hulslander officiating. Burial will be in the Reformed and Lutheran Cemetery, W. Church St. Centre Hall. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church after the funeral and graveside service. (There will be no public visitation.)
