Josephine James Crandall, 94, of Batavia, N.Y., died Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Juniper Village at Brookline, State College, PA.

Born July 22, 1924, in Stedman, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Harold and Alice Turney James. On September 6, 1947 she married Morris S. Crandall, who preceded her in death on September 23, 2008.

She is survived by three children, Ron Crandall and his wife, Sally, of State College, Barbara Smith and her husband, Mike, of Batavia, N.Y. and Norman Crandall and his wife, Kathy, of Stoneham, MA; six grandchildren, David Crandall and Susan Hart, Jim and Emily Smith, Joe and Kate Crandall; one great-grandson, Noah Hart. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Wheeler, a son, Jim Crandall, and two grandchildren, Dan Smith and Amanda Crandall.

She was a 1942 graduate of Chautauqua Central School.

While residing in the Jamestown, N.Y. area in the 1940s, she was employed as a secretary for Empire Mutual and Marlin-Rockwell. After that time, she was primarily a homemaker.

Josephine was a long-time member of the North Harmony United Methodist Church, where she also played the piano.

She enjoyed genealogy, crossword puzzles, and knitting.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Chautauqua County, New York.

Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Lakewood, N.Y.
