Junior H. Meyer, 91, of State College, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Mt. Nittany Medical Center at State College.

He was born March 30, 1922, at State College, a son of the late William Henry and Clara Hockman Meyer.

He was married to Mary Vasiloff, who preceded him in death on December 16, 2005.

On July 11, 1942, he was inducted into the U. S. Army, serving with Battery D 124th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion as a Cannoneer. He was involved in action in Tunisian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Prior to his honorable discharge on Oct. 23, 1945, he earned a Good Conduct Medal and a European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with one Bronze Arrowhead.

Following his return from the service, he worked at Penn Dairy in State College and later as a guard at Rockview Correctional Institution until his retirement. He was a member of Faith United Church of Christ in State College.

Mr. Meyer truly exemplified the life of a person from “The Greatest Generation.” For many years, he worked one full-time and one part time job to provide for his family; and he was happy and contented to do so. He was a quiet man, who prayed earnestly. He truly loved and appreciated patriotic songs and hymns.

Meyer and his wife Carol of Inver Grove Heights, MN; six grandchildren, Matthew A. Alters and his wife, Courtney; Bradley D. Alters and his wife, Susan; Christopher W. Meyer and his wife, Penny; Melissa A. Fink, Rebecca L. Meyer, and Adam C. Meyer; and four great grandchildren, Kevin, Kaleb, Heidi and Kellen.

He was the youngest of twelve children, all of whom preceded him in death.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 PM, Sunday July 7, 2013, at Pine Hall Cemetery on West College Avenue, State College, with the Reverend Monica Dawkins-Smith officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Faith United Church of Christ, 300 East College Ave., State College, PA 16801.
