Kenneth R. Shope, Sr, 84, entered his eternal rest on Monday, August 12, 2013, at his home in Middletown, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Mary H (Roan) Shope, formerly of Bellefonte, with whom he had recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Born in State College in 1928, he was the eldest and last surviving child of Luther Daniel Shope, Sr. and Sarah Estright Shope.
Ken retired from the Federal Government in 1983 after 31 years, but continued working until 1995. He enjoyed hunting with his sons and working in the yard. He had many skills and strove to provide for his family. He loved making others laugh and was a master of sarcasm and quick wit.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; Sharen Swain of Myrtle Beach, SC, Ken Shope, Jr and Rhonda Darhower both of Dauphin, Harry Shope and Dawn Shope both of Middletown; his step children David Bumbarger of Newville, Tom Bumbarger of Middletown and Penny Bumbarger of York; twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., 206 N. Spring St., Bellefonte, PA, on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at 12:00 PM, with Pastor Anne Smith officiating. A public visitation will be from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, on the same day. Burial will follow in Meyer Cemetery, Benner Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, Suite 102, 17 E High Street, Carlisle, PA. The family would like to extend eternal gratitude and many thanks to the wonderful individuals of Hospice who aided in his comfort at home.
