Obituary of Leon Alters, 85

Leon N. Alters, 85, of Bellefonte, died on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Mount Nittany Medical Center in College Township after a short illness.

Born on February 28, 1928 in Coburn, a son of the late James and Hattie (Shawver) Alters.

On June 3, 1960 in Bellefonte, he married Sara (Sally) A. Novosel, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, April Alters Bresnehan and her husband Stephen of Butler, PA; four grandsons, Eric J. of Pittsburgh, Dr. Michael S. of Albuquerque, NM, Adam J. and Brian C. both of Butler, PA; his sisters, Bernice Snyder and Frances Byers both of Millheim, and several nieces and nephews.

Leon served active duty in the US Army during the Korean War from Feb. 1951 to Nov. 1952. After returning from Korea, he worked on his father’s farm. He worked for College Block Co in State College from 1959 to 1962. After that, Mr. Alters then went to work at Penn State University where he retired in 1991 after 35 years of service.

Leon was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Bellefonte, and also a member of Millheim American Legion. He enjoyed gardening and making wooden toys and other wood items, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Goldie (Alters) Smith, and brothers Paul, Lawrence, Elmer, Jay, Ralph, Richard, and Dean.

Friends will be received from 6-8 PM on Friday, September 27, 2013 at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, 1034 Benner Pike, State College. Funeral Services will be held from the funeral home on Saturday, September 28, 2013, beginning at 9:30 AM, with the Reverend Andrew R. Morgan officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Millheim where military honors will be accorded.
