Louis A. Nyiri, 83, of State College died Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.

Born December 12, 1930, in Phillipsburg, NJ, he was the son of the late Alexander and Sophie Varga Nyiri. On April 26, 1958, he married Ethel A. Liptak, who preceded him in death on May 4, 2012.

He is survived by two daughters, E. Valerie Nyiri of Halifax, NC and Luann Nyiri-Weaver and her husband, Rick, of Bellefonte; one son, Rev. Louis A Nyiri II and his wife, Rev. Candace Veon-Nyiri, of Gettysburg; four grandchildren, Amie, Melinda and Joseph Hutchings and Alex Nyiri; two great-grandchildren Erik and Jackson Hasty.

Louis served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He was a Merchant Mariner employed as Chief Engineer aboard the SS Major Stephen W. Pless for the Waterman Steamship Corporation.

Louis was a member of the State College Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the F & AM Lodge # 268 of Bellefonte and the State College American Legion Post 245.

He loved his “grand dogs” Kasey and Angus.

Friends will be received from 5 until 8 p.m., on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St. State College.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, March 7, 2014, at the State College Presbyterian Church, 132 West Beaver Ave, State College, with the Reverend Joel Blunk officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the F & AM Lodge # 268, 125 North Allegheny Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823 or to the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (Nyiri Family Scholarship Fund), 616 North Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.
