Obituary of Mary Newell, 76

Mary Elizabeth Newell, 76, of Bellefonte, formerly of Knoxville, TN, died Friday, April 27, 2018, at Mt. Nittany Medical Center, State College.

Born September 29, 1941, in Portsmouth, OH, she was the daughter of the late Carmon B. and Martha Elizabeth Bergman Newell.

Mary is survived by two sisters, Patricia A. Barbash and husband, Robert, of State College, and Judith A. Laska of Cleveland, OH. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, with whom she had special relationships.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Carmon Newell and her brother-in-law, Walter Laska.

Mary graduated from Liberty High School in Bethlehem in 1959. She received a Liberal Arts degree from Penn State University in 1963.

Mary began her professional career as a social worker but transitioned to the medical field after a few years. She worked for trauma surgeon, Dr. John Hudson in Knoxville, TN for 17 years. Following retirement, Mary enjoyed working at Office Depot in Knoxville.

In the 70s, Mary worked for the Director of the PSU Artist Series and was active throughout the organization. She was also a member of the concert choir and was able to sing on 2 European tours. Mary enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, and her cats. Mary was dedicated to the preservation of Knoxville history. She was involved with the research and documentation of cemeteries for slaves throughout the Knoxville area.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
