Melvin L. “Kato” Shaw, 86, of Snow Shoe, passed away on Monday, May 23, 2011 at Centre Crest Nursing Home. Born on March 13, 1925, he was the son of the late James and Esther Hall Shaw. On January 30, 1955, in Orviston, he married Phyllis M. Heichel who survives at home.
Kato was a 1943 graduate from Snow Shoe High School. He was a member of the Snow Shoe Church of Christ. He was employed as a machinist for Piper Aircraft, retiring in 1982 after 32 years of service.
Kato was enlisted in the US Air Force during WWII, earning the rank of Sergeant. For his years service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, and the Victory Medal.
Kato enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors. He followed his children and grandchildren in all their sporting events. He loved spending time with his family.
Kato is survived by his wife and three children; Keith A. Shaw, his wife Brenda, of Howard, Gary J. Shaw, his wife, Trish, of Snow Shoe, and Deb K. Weaver of Snow Shoe. Also surviving are his nine grandchildren; Tracy Rigg, Jodi Reed, Christy Godinez, Shana Shaw, Mandi Harter, Megan Shaw, Kelsey Shaw, Jacob Weaver, and Kaleb Weaver, six great grandchildren, Garrett, Colton, Kadyn Rigg, Jozie and Emery Reed, and Keira Godinez.
Along with his parents, Kato was preceded in death by one son, Kent L. Shaw, two brothers, James and William Shaw, and two sisters, Genevieve Wenrick and Elvira Beightol. Kato was the last of his generation.
Friends will be received on Thursday, May 26, 2011 from 2-4 & 6-8pm at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, 106 W. Sycamore St. Snow Shoe. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 11am at the Snow Shoe Church of Christ, Clarence Rd, Snow Shoe with Dwight D. Bolin, Evangelist, officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will immediately follow at the Snow Shoe Church of Christ Cemetery.
