Mervin L. Harter, 85, of Smullton, passed away Tuesday, October 28th at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Mervin, a son of the late Ellsworth and Doretha (Day) Harter, was born in Wolfe’s Store on October 25, 1929. Married on December 2, 1950 to Dorothy J. Arbogast, they were together for 49 years before Dorothy passed in August of 1999.

Mervin was first employed at the former Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven, then as an oil truck delivery and service man for the former R.E. Breon and Sons of Rebersburg. He then went to Cerro Brass and Metal and retired from there. Mervin was an avid Phillies baseball fan. He assisted with establishing cable tv in Rebersburg so he could watch the games. He loved all sports and would watch anything sports related. Mervin coached Little League Baseball, enjoyed hunting, going to camp and was active in the Retirees Bowling League at the former Millheim Lanes. He served on the election board for Miles Township and was a former member of the Lutheran Church in Rebersburg where he had served on the board and sang in the choir.

Mervin is survived by two sons, Regan Harter of Rebersburg and Steven Harter (Tammy) of Centre Hall; one brother, Maurice “Max” Harter (Dorothy) of Nittany; one sister, Patricia Whitmer (Robert) of Bellefonte, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and three daughters. Mervin was preceded in death by brothers, Gerald, Donald, Kenneth, and Gary Harter and one sister, Nancy Brickley.

In accordance with Mervin’s wishes, all services are private. Contributions in memory of Mervin may be given to Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, 100 North Academy Ave., Danville, Pa. 17822.
