Mildred “Mid” Irene Witmer, 98, of State College, entered eternal life on January 28, 2011, after a life of longevity and many blessings.

Mildred was born in Marshall, Ill. on November 4, 1912, a daughter of the late Frank and Sidney Johnson Haenig. Mildred was a direct descended of William Penn. On August 17, 1939, she married Ray Joseph Witmer, who preceded her in death on January 26, 1986.

She is survived by a son Ronald Witmer and his wife, Louise, and a daughter Sharon Houser and her husband, Pat, all of State College. Her well-beloved family includes five grandchildren, Mark Witmer and his wife, Catherine, Alan Witmer and his wife, Kristy, and Patrick Houser, Jr. and his wife, Mary, all of State College, Christina Witmer of Springfield, and Shelly Hunt and her husband, Jim, of Palmrya; and five great-grandchildren, Christopher Witmer, Anna Witmer and Grace Witmer of State College and Colton and Kelsey Kruse of Palmyra.

Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by seven sisters and three brothers and was the last of her generation.

Mildred and her husband moved to State College in 1955 to open the “Penn Hi Boy” Restaurant, which they operated for many years before retirement. She was known for her hard work, and her home-made delicious pies, breads and rolls and other foods.

After retiring, she enjoyed crafts, quilt-making and playing cards.

Mildred was an active member of the State College Senior Center and served as treasurer. She loved playing cards and enjoyed being with her friends from the Center. She was a past member of The State College Eastern Star No. 388, White Shrine # 46 and the State College Women’s Club.

Mildred was a beautiful woman inside and out, always placing her family’s needs before her own and was known for her patience and unconditional love. Mildred was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She always kept in touch with her many nieces and nephews and loved her family unconditionally.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, January 31, 2011, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. A memorial service will follow at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Susan Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Boalsburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her honor may be made to the State College Senior Center, 131 S. Fraser Street, State College, PA 16801.
